Josefine Weekey: Our daughter started with "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," by Robert Persig. It's approachable for non-philosophers yet contains some fairly heavy concepts like 'if we cannot agree on what's good, then how can I be a good person?' Next she did Ralph Waldo Emerson, again because it was non-academic and in modern English. She went on to get a PhD in philosophy and now teaches it at a state university....Show more

Coleman Senn: I'm glad to hear of your interest. Not many teens have such an interest.I started with reading histories of philosophy. Bertrand Russell's history of Western Philosophy is very good. He gives a short bio of each philosopher, presents his main arguments, and then evaluates them fairly.Soren Kirkegaard is accessible. I learned a couple of important things from him, such as the importance of living your life authentically (without putting on airs,! making false claims, lying, etc.) Nietzsche is an absolutely ! wonderful writer, but he contradicts himself and his sisters had an unknown and probably detrimental effect on his writings. You can ignore all is garbage about the Superman and enjoy the rest of what the has to say.John Stuart Mill in the mid 1800's was an outstanding champion of female rights. And of course, feminism is a branch of philosophy....Show more
