Fermin Tara: duh...why do you think??
Ardelia Liptow: The same sort of person that seeks knowledge also seeks truth. They actually believe having the facts will lead to a better outcome more often. They test the propositions their culture has proposed they accept on mere say-so in order to have social approval and acceptance, and in testing find them wanting. A source of great frustration for me when I was a Christian pastor was that the most dogmatic persons in the congregation were also the most ignorant of scripture and the faith generally. They were not interested in the salvation of unbelievers as much as they were looking forward to listening to them scream in the agonies of hell for all eternity, because this would be a vindication of their mindless conformity to the prevailing culture. I would hear these same folks rant about "college professors" and education as though ignorance made one spiritual and living in a double-wide in the trailer court was proof ! one hadn't "sold out to the devil." I would go to pastor's breakfasts and hear the Bible College grads babbling things declared heresies and anathema centuries ago, demonstrating a complete inability to even understand scripture in context, and acusing seminarians like myself of having "gone to cemetery" as though learning to repeat by rote the teachings of another ignorant hick was somehow virtuous. One of these churches actually ordains pastors on the basis of having listened to all of the founding pastor's recorded tapes twice. And believe me that guy has taught some of the silliest nonsense ever cooked up by back woods snake handlers, such as completely ahistorical interpretations made up from whole cloth to slander Catholicism and Jews. Christian Bookstores dumped thousands of books in the dumpter when the end of the world didn't come as he had predicted, but no one stoned him as a false prophet. It's simple really. People that regard learning believe it has value for ! making correct decisions in the real world. People that despis! e learning are more about the security of fitting in and conforming and carrying a chip on their shoulder because they know at some level they are inferior because of their intellectual sloth....Show more
Veta Slicker: Why are you unaware that correlation is not causation ?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_...
Carmelina Enoch: 'jesus loves you' nope, i was specifically careful to not generalize, a positive correlation means that when x rises the y rises, education rises, atheism rises. i didn't say all christians are dumb i was just talking about a positive correlation between education and atheism.
Nilda Bafia: Religion allows and encourages people to avoid thinking, which of course means that fewer get into higher education.
Isaias Badgley: Education is from Satan.Remember, Satan wanted humans to eat from the tree of knowledge; God wanted them to be ignorant forever.
Lanita Reichman: Besides improving reasoning, education also! provides greater access to information.Fore example, I understand why some people think Barack Obama is a muslim, they just don't know any better. However, I would be very surprised to find out that a person that reads a major newspaper everyday thinks that Barack Obama is a muslim.Similarly, I understand why people are religious. However, once you have a sufficient understanding of the history of religions, astrophysics, evolutionary biology, and neuroscience it becomes much more difficult to be religious. Also, the questioner has asked about a generalization that is true (as a generalization). Numerous studies have demonstrated that the higher your level of education, the less likely you are to be religious. This does not mean that there are not highly educated religious people or poorly educated non-religious people. However, as a generalization, it is true and there is a reason (perhaps multiple reasons) for that....Show more

Ron Keliipio: Gods are fragile things; they may be killed by a whiff of science or a dose of common sense. - Chapman Cohen
Percy Seiger: YesIt explains the 90% of scientists being atheistsAnd for believers - not the other way around
Marjory Stromme: 2 Tim 3:7 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Magda Vandergriend: It is simple - the human mind like a parachute has to be open to function properly!!Educating opens the mind and makes everything possible!!Find it hard to believe?1. Acceptance of a supernatural claim tends to promote cooperative social relationships. This communication demonstrates a willingness to accept, without skepticism, the influence of the speaker in a way similar to a child's acceptance of the influence of a parent. By encouraging this kind of behavior where the most intense social relationships occur it facilitates the lack of skepticism! and deters more open minded thinking.Indoctrination reinforced with propaganda closes minds!!2. Science has shown atheists have a higher intelligence than people with a strong religious faith. The difference is 5.8 points according to findings in developmental psychology!!! More members of the "intellectual elite" considered themselves atheists than the national average.Only 7 percent of members of the American National Academy of Sciences believed in God. Whilst only 3.3 percent believed in God in the UKâs Royal Society. Several Gallup poll studies of the general population have shown that those with higher IQâs tend not to believe in God." Jeremy Donohue: There are MANY brilliant people who believe in God!Why do you throw sarcasm out to cloud the issues? What's YOUR education level? Myself, I remained on the Dean's list for three years of my time i! n college, and I'm a senior programmer/analyst. What about you? There i! s absolutely no such correlation!...Show more
Burt Cheevers: I wonder why you even asked this. Your mind is already made up. You think ALL atheists are smarter than ALL Christians.I have 6 college degrees and am a Christian. You have quite a few grammatical errors in your post, your details, etc. Thanks for proving that atheists make mistakes and aren't as brilliant as they claim to be....Show more
Sammy Hatzenbihler: hopefully education improves reasoning, or rational thinkers are more likely to pursue higher education
Jeannine Vassie: ppl with half a brain are not easily manipulated
Kris Bozelle: "There are MANY brilliant people who believe in God!"There is absolutely no such correlation!" there goes the logic again....there is a correlation and there can be many religious people with degrees but that doesn't affect the correlation...do you think if there are christians with degrees it automatically means atheism doesn't increase with higher educat! ion because it does.
Rivka Killmer: it is due to the liberalized education system they came up in.
Wilburn Denice: Given the fact that most of the best schools on the planet are affiliated with a specific religion, I would suggest you dont know what you are talking about.
Cody Shimko: As proved by...a Wikipedia page. Please be careful where you find your sources.
Judie Kise: A higher level of education means that person is likely to have more opportunities to learn the facts that disprove religion.
Ninfa Aronica: I'm not sure, exactly. I've got a naive theory that says this correlation is because the longer you're in school, the more you're trained to show the steps in your thinking that led to your conclusions, and to look for things that don't support your conclusions. If you apply that kind of thought process to religion, atheism or agnosticism is likely to follow.
Michal Semple: Use your imagination.Education and critical thinking sk! ills go hand in hand.
Barton Morfee: That's not necessarily true.! My father holds several bachelors and masters degrees, is a college professor and devout christian. History is full of people just like him. What would be the evidence of this theory? Just because most of the scientific community tends toward atheism doesn't mean that all people who are highly educated are atheists.
Jose Bouliouris: Higher education, in general, requires training in critical thinking.
