Willie Tun: There are a number of taxation and other financial benefits (access to pensions, life insurance, etc) that flow from marriage as opposed to civil unions. More importantly, it's a matter of respect and common courtesy. They have a RIGHT to be treated no differently than any other couple, and not be treated as second class citizens.
Marcia Cheathan: It depends on the state. Each state defines unions differently.
Carolin Southers: It depends on the state's individual laws but in general, marriage is considered better than unions because in one way or another, unions are not as equal as marriage in terms of benefits such as life insurance.
Dan Seen: It's a boom for divorce lawyers.
