How to reference books in books?

Michelle Sohre: No one owns the The Bible and i think Gullivers Travels in public domain (anyone can use it). Things go in public domain 70 years after the authors death. Folk stories are usuable but steer clear from modern books if you can. If you must use it i don't see anything wrong with it.

Gennie Shauer: You can do any "pop culture" references you like, for instance your characters can enjoy and read other (real) books.What you can't do is take chunks of those books and use them as if they had been written by you. Not even if you say "actually, they were written by these other people."No, you _can't_ cite it. If you'd need to, it's not legal to use it.
